3. Maintain a straight line
This will maintain a straight line. If you have just one man laying the grass, consider him bringing the roll close buy and let him put them down approximately where he will lay them. This will speed things up a bit. If you have a team on a big project then two ore three can lay the grass whilst the remainder bring the rolls close buy. This actually goes quite quickly. Once you have laid the first couple of rolls down, just keep standing back to see that you are still maintaining your line.
You are now ready to plant!
Once you have completed your soil preparation and you have leveled your ground as much as possible, you can now lay down the instant lawn. Our grass sod measure 1,10 m long x 450mm wide. Two laid down next to each other will cover an area of 1.1 m x 900 mm = one sq/m.
.When the sods are cut by the sod cutter, the grass is cut off from the root bed, with some soil attached and rolled up into a roll. So in effect it is as if one is neatly picking up a towel that was spread out on the sand. When this grass sod / roll arrives at the place of planting it needs to be placed down gently in the same way that it was lifted. This means laying the towel out neatly again on the sand. Unfortunately what happens, most cases, is that the person laying the sods down, tend to force them together to close any gaps and thus unfortunately shrinking the surface area of the grass because it is now being compacted and not just spread out.
For this reason we always encourage clients to add a 10% shrinkage factor into your area calculation. Once this principle has been resolved we can now proceed. We need to present the rootbed of the sods to a surface area that will allow for rapid root penetration. if you have not loosened yous soil the roots will struggle to penetrate and establish. To start laying the rolls out, where possible, identify a straight edge that can be used as the initial guideline.
Once the grass has been laid, watering can commence. Keep the grass roots wet for at least the first 10 days or so. If it is very hot, keep an eye on the grass colour. LM will tend to turn a blueish grey colour telling you to give water please. Kikuyu will go yellow very quickly when no water is given. Bare in mind that the grass has been cut off its rootbed so it is under duress. it may take a day or three for the grass to start establishing and mat therefor look unhappy for a day or two. Grass is very resiliant and where there is food and water grass will grow.
